CPUC SEEKS APPLICATIONS FOR
PUBLIC POLICY PAYPHONE PROGRAM
SAN FRANCISCO, May 8, 2009 - The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today announced it is seeking applications for its Public Policy Payphone Program, which provides for placement of up to 50 Public Policy Payphones in the state.
The program provides for installation of Public Policy Payphones and covers 50 percent of their monthly recurring charges. The following criteria will be considered to determine Public Policy Payphone placement:
· Enhance public health and safety
· Rural or remote area with significant public traffic, even if only seasonally
· Interstate or state highway rest stop
· Low income or disadvantaged community setting with limited landline telephone availability
· Demonstrated need for a public payphone, with the request supported by a governmental entity or local community group willing to pay at least half the costs
· Presentation of other facts justifying the need for a publicly supported payphone
The program application is available at www.cpuc.ca.gov/PUC/Telco/Public+Programs/payphone.htm. Anyone can apply to the program. To be considered, please complete the application, and return a hard copy or fax the application with signature to:
