Railroad Safety

Fifty railroad corporations operate in California. There are 11,000 public grade crossings located within 52 counties and 400 cities in California. The PUC employs federally certified staff inspectors and coordinates with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is the largest participating state agency in the nation to ensure that railroads comply with federal railroad safety regulations. The Commission investigates railroad accidents and responds to safety related inquiries made by community officials, the general public, and railroad labor organizations. The Commission is an active participant in Operation Lifesaver, a grade crossing awareness training program.
