PUC NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

SAN FRANCISCO, July 8, 2004 - The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) today named Steve Larson as Executive Director, effective July 15, 2004.

Mr. Larson brings to the Commission more than 35 years of experience with the Executive and Legislative branches of State government, most recently as the Executive Director of the California Energy Commission and then as Chief Deputy Director of the Department of Finance. Prior to that, Mr. Larson served in many diverse positions as staff to the Legislature, including 17 years as Chief Consultant to the Senate Budget Committee.

"I welcome Steve to the Commission and look forward to working with him in his capacity as Executive Director," said PUC President Michael R. Peevey. "Steve brings an impressive work history to the Commission and his proven leadership skills will help the Commission set and meet its goals."

"I look forward to joining the Commission and working with its dedicated staff on the myriad of issues the Commission faces daily," said Mr. Larson. "I am aware of the issues the Commission faces and the challenges and rewards of State service and am ready to put my experience to use at the PUC."

Mr. Larson received a B.A. in philosophy/psychology and an M.A. in history from San Jose State University and served two years in the Peace Corps in Guyana.

Mr. Larson replaces Bill Ahern, who retired from the Commission in June.
