CPUC APPROVES RATE INCREASE FOR CAL-AM WATER

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today approved a $2.3 million or 22 percent revenue increase for California-American Water Company's (Cal-Am) Coronado District to offset higher costs to purchase water for its customers, effective in five days.

Cal-Am purchases water for its 21,000 customers in Coronado, Imperial Beach and portions of San Diego from the City of San Diego. Last June 2000, the city increased its rates, charging Cal-Am $522.65 an acre foot; the previous rate was $439.90.

This is the first increase for the water company since 1995.

A surcharge of 11 cents per hundred cubic feet of water used will be placed on bills for two years to collect $1.4 million in costs accrued from June to September last year. Also, water use rates will increase 20 cents per hundred cubic feet to cover increased costs of $1.1 million.

The residential customer who uses the system-wide average of 2,000 cubic feet of water a month will see a $4.01increase in the monthly bill, from the current $37.52 to $41.53.
