PUC TO HOST HALLOWEEN FAIR FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS
SAN FRANCISCO, October 24, 2007 - The California Public Utilities Commission's (PUC) "Allies for Education Partnership" will host a 10th Annual Halloween Fair in an on-going effort to provide a fun, safe, and enriching experience for the children in Grades K-5 attending three San Francisco schools. The Fair is being held in coordination with the San Francisco School Volunteers, an independent non-profit organization that recruits, supports, and engages a community of volunteers who inspire public school students to achieve their full potential.
WHEN: Friday, October 26, 2007, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
WHERE: PUC Courtyard, 505 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco
WHO: San Francisco Board of Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi (District 5), San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia, the PUC, San Francisco School Volunteers, John Muir Elementary School, Tenderloin Community School, Robert Louis Stevenson School, and nearly 700 children, teachers, and parents.
WHAT: The 10th Annual Halloween Fair will feature clowns, balloons, face painting, treats, art poster contest, games, scary stories, a haunted house, a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) presentation, Operation Lifesaver - a railroad safety education program, and Timothy Troy of the San Francisco Public Library Children's Center offering storytelling. Music will be provided by the Cold Sweat Band comprised of PUC employees. The event is supported through fundraising activities of PUC volunteers.
WHY: To provide a fun, safe, and enriching experience for children in three area schools. Each year volunteers from the PUC host special events such as a Halloween Fair and Environmental Awareness Day, and provide tutoring in reading, writing, math, and mentoring skills two hours per week to help young people thrive and feel a connection to adults in their neighborhood. Last year, PUC employees raised over $10,000 in bake sales and arts and crafts sales to donate to John Muir to start a Parent-Teacher Association and to fund the school's beautification project.
