PUC APPROVES RENEWABLE POWER CONTRACTS FOR STATE'S UTILITIES TO CONTINUE ON PATH TOWARD CLEAN ENERGY GOAL
SAN FRANCISCO, May 24, 2007 - The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) today approved a new biogas contract and six contract extensions for renewable power for the state's three Investor-Owned Utilities, contributing to keeping renewables in the utilities' portfolios in order to meet the statewide Renewables Portfolio Standard policy.
The PUC approved a 10-year biogas contract for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) from the BioEnergy facility in Fresno County. The contract will be used to provide biogas produced from dairy waste into PG&E's natural gas pipeline, and represents the first time in California that biogas from dairy waste has been piped to gas-fired power plants on a large scale.
The PUC also approved four wind power contracts and one geothermal contract for Southern California Edison. The wind power contracts are with the facilities Caithness 251 and Ridgetop. Both the Caithness 251 and Ridgetop projects are for repowered and expanded capacity at existing wind parks currently contracted with Edison. The geothermal contract is with Coso Clean Power. The total capacity of these five contracts is between 236 and 273 megawatts, depending on the extent of repower at the wind parks.
Lastly, the PUC extended San Diego Gas and Electric Company's existing 5-year contract approved by the PUC in 2002 with San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater Department, a digester gas facility that will supply 22 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.
The state's Renewables Portfolio Standard Program requires Investor-Owned Utilities, Energy Service Providers, and Community Choice Aggregators operating in California to obtain 20 percent of their retail sales from renewable energy sources by 2010.
